Walkers Support Habitat in a Big Way

More than 100 supporters walk to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity as Aftershock leads the way.

Supporters of Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg area showed up in record numbers recently to participate in a walk to raise funds for the ecumenical housing ministry.  Habitat for Humanity was one of 27 non-profit organizations to take part in Highmark’s annual Walk for a Healthy Community held May 30th on City Island.

The record number of 105 walkers for Habitat raised more than $7,100 on the day in which some 2,000 participants took to the 5K course for the common good.  Both the number of walkers for Habitat for Humanity’s group in the walk and the total number of walkers for the overall event were new records. Many Habitat for Humanity walkers donned hard hats and nail aprons to show their support and to stand out in the massive crowd.

“We were thrilled with the response of Habitat supporters for this event,” said Habitat’s Director of Development Mark Mattern.  “We had board members, Women Build members, youth groups, businesses, churches, builders and individual volunteers all getting together to make this day a big success.”

The top fundraising group was the youth group called Aftershock.  These young people represented the congregations from the Bowmansdale Church of God and the Mt. Pleasant Church of God.  There were 17 representatives for the Aftershock group and they alone raised close to $1,850.00.

Hershey High School’s Habitat for Humanity, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area, also had an outstanding showing in its first year as an organization with 17 students representing the school at the walk.

The money raised by Habitat for Humanity will go a long way toward eliminating poverty housing here in Central Pennsylvania.  All funds earned on the day of the walk will stay here and support local projects.
