MLK Jr. Day of Service Set for Allison Hill

 

 

Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area has announced that the local non-profit will team with several other organizations on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for a special “Day of  Service.”  This year, MLK Jr. Day falls on Monday, January 20, 2014.

 

Habitat for Humanity will work in conjunction with the Brethren Community Ministries (bcmPEACE), Brethren Housing Association, The Harrisburg Rain Barrel Coalition, Tri County Community Action and the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg.

 

Projects this year will include a Youth Poetry Workshop, Painting, Beautification, Clean-ups, Minor Home Repair and much more. Participants will gather on January 20th at the Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren located at 219 Hummel Street in Harrisburg, PA.MLK Jr. Day of Service Allison Hill

 

Registration, which includes a light breakfast, will go from 8:00 AM until 9:15 AM.  PA State Senators Rob Teplitz will welcome volunteers at 9:00 AM. The first session will run from 9:30 AM until Noon.  Lunch and an MLK program will follow until 1:00 when the afternoon session begins.  Registration for the afternoon will begin at 11:30 AM.  The afternoon session runs from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM.

 

Participants are asked to make sure they are present before the session start times as many of the projects are off-site. These locations will all be in the Allison Hill section of Harrisburg.

Katie Manzullo-Thomas, Habitat for Humanity's Community Outreach Coordinator and an AmeriCorps Member, represented Habitat during the planning of the upcoming event.  Manzullo-Thomas is working with Habitat for Humanity through the AmeriCorps Program.

 

Habitat International has partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that funds and oversees AmeriCorps programs, since 1994. Since then, more than 5,000 AmeriCorps members have served with Habitat for Humanity around the country (including dozens here in Harrisburg), building homes, serving communities and gaining valuable perspective about the challenges that face our country and how to meet those needs.  

  

 

Media Notice:  Those interested in visiting different sites on the 20th are asked to stop by the Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren during the morning registration, 8:00 AM until 9:15 AM and during the mid-day break from 12:00 Noon and 1:00 PM.
