Walk with Habitat for Humanity, Eliminate Poverty Housing
Habitat for Humanity looks to top last year’s effort
Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg is planning to be a major part of this year’s Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community slated for Saturday, May 19th at 9:00 AM on the campus of Harrisburg Area Community College.
Over the past three years, Habitat for Humanity has been one of the top non-profits in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community. More than 700 walkers participated on behalf of Habitat for Humanity over that time while the venue was still on City Island. Not only will there be a change in location this year, it is also much easier for everyone to get involved.

“We had more than 200 walkers and raised over $13,000 last year,” said Mark Mattern, Habitat for Humanity Director of Development. “We had wonderful team leaders and I am hoping they will all be back again this year. Habitat’s goal is to eliminate Poverty Housing here in Central PA and each and every walker moves us closer to that goal.”
Habitat for Humanity leans on the work of “Team Captains” to put together groups of walkers and help keep those walkers motivated and excited about the walk. Although the teams made up a large portion of Habitat’s proceeds in 2011, several individuals raised large amounts for the walk.
“It is really easy to get involved with this event this year,” said Mattern. “The registration is done on-line and all donations are made right there on the walker’s page. The walk starts at 9:00 in the morning on May 19th and everyone will be home by lunch time.”
The money raised by Habitat for Humanity will go a long way toward eliminating poverty housing here in Central Pennsylvania. All funds earned on the day of the walk will stay here in the Harrisburg area and support local projects.
To register for the walk or make a general donation to our team, go to http://www.walkforahealthycommunity.org to sign-up as an individual or to start a team. Walk brochures are available at the local Habitat office and will be delivered by the Habitat staff.
