Habitat Raises Funds Through Walk
More than 200 supporters walk to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity as Friends of Habitat leads the way.
For the second straight year, the team called “Friends of Habitat” raised the most money during Habitat’s participation in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community. Although this was a small group in numbers, the team raised close to $6,000. Habitat for Humanity was one of 37 non-profit organizations to take part in Highmark’s annual Walk for a Healthy Community held May 14th on City Island.
All totaled, Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area was represented by more than 200 walkers. This group represented 23 different teams and raised more then $12,000. It was a good day for Habitat for Humanity, but many felt the day could have been much stronger.
“The rainy weather has been a big problem in the area this year,” said Habitat’s Director of Development Mark Mattern. “We had a lot of registered walkers who did not make it to the walk and we think it was because of the weather. It never really rained on City Island and I must say that those who were there, they were in great spirits.”
The largest team again this year, came from Hershey as the students from Hershey High School and Milton Hershey School came together to support Habitat in this annual event. Although t-shirts were offered to the walkers by Highmark, the Hershey team arrived in their own shirts to signify team unity.
Other notable teams included the new Habitron squad, Zack Attach and volunteers from Habitat’s Women Build.
The money raised for Habitat for Humanity will go a long way toward eliminating poverty housing here in Central Pennsylvania. All funds earned on the day of the walk will stay here and support local projects.
