VOLUNTEER WORK POLICY
Habitat is committed to providing a safe
and organized work site.
In order to promote the effectiveness and safety of volunteers at
the construction sites, the following rules have been set by the
Volunteer and Construction Committees.
-
PLEASE DO NOT begin work without authorization
of the Construction Manager, Office Manager or Site Supervisor
-
Primary weekday hours are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Volunteers should bring a bag lunch and beverage (water is provided on the job site). There will be a lunch break around the noontime hour, at which time volunteers and homeowners are encouraged to enjoy this time of fellowship. All construction volunteers should arrive by 8:15 a.m. Crew and job assignments are handed out at this time, so please arrive promptly.
-
YOU MUST SCHEDULE CONSTRUCTION VOLUNTEER TIME. All volunteers, including those supporting homeowners sweat equity hours, should be scheduled through the Volunteer Coordinator. This is to ensure proper safety and training, and to avoid having too many or too few workers for the job site. Saturdays fill up quickly, so please call at least one two weeks in advance.
-
PLEASE NOTE WHEN YOU ARE SCHEDULED – YOU MAY BE ASSIGNED TO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: Home repair projects, house construction, cleanup, demolition, yard or lot cleanup, mowing, and trash removal. All of these jobs are vital to our program in the building, rehabbing and repairing of homes. WE will try to let you know what you will be doing prior to your volunteering, but we cannot guarantee.
CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT
STURDY FOOTWEAR IS REQUIRED. Work boots are best. Your
feet must be completely covered, and hiking/work boots will protect
you far more than sneakers. Clothing will get dirty and may
get damaged in the work zone. Protect your legs- no shorts
allowed on worksite. Please be sure to dress conservatively
as this will help to ensure your safety while working within the
neighborhoods.
We work in all types of weather, please dress accordingly. In
some cases hard hats and/or safety glasses may be recommended or
required and will be supplied by Habitat when needed. If you
wish to bring your own, please feel free to do so.
Habitat has a large inventory of various tools, however volunteers
are welcome to bring their own tools as well. If you bring
your own tools please label them with your name and be sure to take
them with you when you leave. If you leave your tools on the
work site, we will consider them a donation.
YOUTH – must be at least 16 years old
We are glad to offer teenagers the Habitat experience, however all
youth volunteers must be at least 16 years old with signed parent
permission. NO
ONE under the age of 16 will be allowed on the work site due to Pennsylvania
state labor laws. One adult leader must accompany every five
youth ages 16 and 17. In addition those 16 and 17 years old
are also subject to strict (task) labor limitations imposed by federal
and state governments.
