Historical Groundbreaking to Take Place in Uptown

with Habitat for Humanity

Habitat’s first Build in Uptown Harrisburg

Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area will hold a special groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, September 15th at 11:00 A.M.  Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson is scheduled to be on hand for the event which will take place in the 600 block of Woodbine Street in the uptown section of Harrisburg.

This special program will kick off Habitat’s Uptown Energy Star Affordable Housing Build and this project will be special to the local Habitat for Humanity for several reasons.

The build will include three new homes which will allow three local families to move from sub-standard housing into safe, affordable, decent homes.  The area is new to Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area as it marks the first new builds for the uptown neighborhood. All three homes will also be energy star homes, which will require each of the new builds to follow energy efficient standards during construction.

Also, Habitat for Humanity will also be kicking off its 25th anniversary year with this special event.

“We could not think of a better way to mark our 25th anniversary in this community than with a multi-build, in a new area,” said Habitat’s Executive Director Eve Wachhaus. “Habitat has been blessed with volunteers who have remained with us over the 25 years, along with some new sponsors that will be making this new construction happen. This is a very exciting time for Habitat for Humanity.”

Stepping forward as full home sponsors for this new project will be Calvary United Methodist Church, Cisco/D & H Cares and Schneider Electric. Representatives from each sponsorship group, as well as the families set to move into the new homes are scheduled to be included in the groundbreaking ceremony.

Others providing assistance to the tri-plex and the uptown Energy Star neighborhood will be PPL Power, Herbert, Rowland and Grubic, Inc, Home Depot and Department of Building and Housing Development, City of Harrisburg.
