Family Thankful for New Home

Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area will dedicate a new home in the Allison Hill section of Harrisburg just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.   The dedication ceremony will take place on Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the home located on Bailey Street between 13th and 14th Streets.

Members of the Kamel/Moussa family will be the guests of honor as they will receive the keys to their new home.  The family contributed more than 350 sweat equity hours toward the completion of the home.  This dedication will also recognize the sponsor of the project, Silver Spring Presbyterian Church.  Members of the Silver Spring congregation did most of the construction on the project, which got underway in April of this year.

“Habitat’s goal of eliminating poverty housing is something the Silver Spring Presbyterian Church understands,” said Habitat Executive Director Eve Wachhaus.  “The Kamel/Moussa family now has a safe, affordable home in which to live. This home will remind us to be thankful for what we have and to remember those not as fortunate.”

The special Habitat project also marks a milestone in the history of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church.  "As we were thinking about how to celebrate our church’s 275th anniversary, we realized how grateful we were to God that we've had a house of worship for all that time. We know how important having a home can be, so we wanted to share that blessing with a Habitat family by helping to build their own home,” said Rev. Dr. Stephen Melton, Associate Pastor at the church.

The new home has four bedrooms and has just over 1,200 square feet in living space and through Habitat for Humanity, the Kamel/Moussa family  will also have a no-interest, no-cost loan on the property.

The Central PA Food Bank will also be on hand to welcome the family as they stock the new home’s kitchen with food.  Central PA Food Bank has been dedicated to ending hunger in the Central PA area for more than 20 years.  The Susquehanna Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America will present the family with an embroidered sampler and each member of the family will receive a quilt courtesy of LeTort Quilt Guild.

Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area is an ecumenical ministry that welcomes all people dedicated to the cause of eliminating poverty housing. Through volunteer labor, tax deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity builds new homes, rehabs and repairs homes and provides educational workshops.  Homes are sold to partner families at no profit and with no-interest mortgages.  Since its inception in 1986, the Harrisburg area affiliate has built more than 50 homes in the Harrisburg, PA area providing simple, decent and affordable homes with families in need.
